This unit covered the qualities of good teachers and learners, roles teachers will find necessary to assume at different times, and factors that affect learning in adults and children. A good teacher is a kind, patient, lively, entertaining person who really loves teaching. He/she is able to motivate, interact well with the class, involve all students, correct students gently, and assess and assist individual students when needed. At various times, dictated by the situation or activity, the teacher will need to assume various roles. These may include: manager/controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/facilitator, model, observer/monitor. A good teacher will be able to identify the role needed at any given time, and transition easily between these roles as necessary. There are several factors that come into play on the learners' side. Often, these factors impact learners of different ages (adult: 18+, post-puberty: 13-17, pre-puberty: 8-12, very young: 2-7) differently. These factors include: learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems, life experience, culture and first language, language level (beginner, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced), and motivation. Remaining aware of these teacher roles, and these attributes of learners, will better help a teacher take the correct role in any given situation, as well as effectively tailor their teaching to a specific group or individual.
