There are a few options when it comes to material when teaching a class. You can use creative or authentic materials depending on the situation. Creative materials (made by the teacher) are useful because they can cater to the class and what their proficiency level is and authentic materials (newspapers, TV guide, etc) are better for real world applicability. It is up to the teacher to decide what type of material to use. Course books are also very helpful. The instructor can use them when it's relevant, but one shouldn't base the entire lesson off of the book. The teacher should always be flexible in their lesson plans.
