There are many material options for the ESL teacher and using a bit of all of them is probably most beneficial. Authentic materials--anything a native speaker encounters such as magazines, songs, movies, menus, applications, receipts, billboards--offer inherently motivating content; created materials are custom-made for a given student group, content based unit, or language skill, and course books provide ready-made scope and sequence, practice material and assessment. All these options have advantages and disadvantages so the wise teacher avails herself of all that is at her fingertips--and does plenty of adapting along the way.
