This unit teaches that we as teachers NEED to be able to tailor our lessons to our students, and that requires us finding and using appropriate course material. This unit defined the pros and cons of using both authentic (newspapers, menus, brochures, etc.) and created/creative (word searches, role-play cards, crossword puzzles, etc.) materials to teach English in the classroom. This unit also emphasized that when using a course book, we need to use it in ways that will not overwhelm or cause boredom amongst the students, and that we should create lesson plans that contain a variety of authentic and creative materials, activities, and exercises that more fully teach English.
