There are three stages to learning new language, but there are different patterns that these stages can follow. The straight line structure is possibly the most commonly used. However, a teacher can experiment with other structures and decide which is most appropriate for her students. She can decide this in advance or decide it based upon student performance at each stage. It is also worth remembering that different students learn in different ways, and some might be less comfortable with some teaching structures than others. The teacher has the flexibility to choose based upon her knowledge of the new functions, or based upon the structure that works best with her students.
