This unit introduces the four basic language skills, which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills, while speaking and writing are productive skills. All skills are of equal importance, but this unit focuses on the receptive skills; reading and listening. When reading and listening people use various specialist skills, such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from context. Some keys to successful receptive skill lessons are; choosing material that interests/motivates the students, building interest before reading and listening, pre-teaching complex vocabulary, varying the material, etc.
