For a beginning ESL teacher or any kind of teacher, course books are helpful for patterns and outline. But as one gets accustomed to the routine of using the prescribed course books, supplemental activities are encouraged. I had an experience working in a conversation school with no course books being used. It was tough because I was just a replacement of a teacher who suddenly quit. I was not also able to speak with the outgoing teacher as to where the students? progress is already. Very vague information was given to me so I had to start from scratch. Whereas, if course books are being utilized there is still continuity to the lesson even if sudden events like that happen.
