Unit 3 instructs us on theories, methods, and techniques. Due to the fact that learners of English do not live in an English speaking environment, they are not exposed to the language hence don?t have the opportunity to put the language in to practice. In order to address this problem, teachers need to apply certain methods and techniques in the classroom that will engage and motivate learners of English to not only study the language but to study and practice it in real daily live situations. We are then introduced to some of the methods and techniques that produce best results which are; grammar- translation, audio- lingualism, presentation, practice and production, task based learning, communicative language teaching, community language learning, the silent way, etc. Beside the above, I learnt that the method and technique that works best in the classroom is the ?Engage, Study and Activate?. This approach motivates students, exposes them to the language and gives students the opportunity to use the language. It also gives the teacher a great deal of flexibility in the classroom. I also learnt about the ?Straight Arrow? ESA Lesson? and the ?Boomerang? ESA Lesson and ?Patchwork? ESA Lesson. This unit has given me a lot of ideas for engage phase and time- filling activities to apply to motivate, engage and activate learners of English who do not live in an English speaking environment. Lastly, it is also important for the teacher to access and give feedbacks on students study progress of the language to encourage self- awareness and improvements.
