This unit deals with common problem situations such as first lessons, different levels, large classes, use of native language, reluctant students and difficulties with listening texts. I agree that it is vital to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course during the first lesson. The teachers can use questionnaires and surveys to allow the students to get to know each other, needs analysis, certain activities like \"Tell us about\" where students roll a dice and tell the class about the topic on it, etc. I also think it is a great idea to use fun and short warmers to inspire and motivate the students and get them in the mood for English. It is also important to know how to deal with the students having different levels. The teacher can use different materials or the same materials, but different tasks, can pair the stronger students with weaker ones or just do nothing which can unfortunately result in the weaker students feeling frustrated or the strong ones bored. With large ?lasses it is vital to use worksheets, pair or group work, choral repetition, appoint group leaders, be dynamic and clear with instructions. It may happen that there are students who don't want to participate in class for some cultural or confidence reason. It is helpful to use plenty of pair work, controlled practice and role-plays because some students find it more comfortable to communicate acting as somebody else than being themselves. I also find it important to have extra activities and materials to make sure that the quickest students have something to do and don't become bored.
