There are many methodologies for teaching a foreign language such as grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, and task-based learning. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but the all include as much exposure to the language as possible, input from the teacher, need for low anxiety and stress, and need for encouragement to discover the language on their own. When creating a lesson plan, there should be three main components: engage, study, and activate. The most simple lesson is the Straight Arrow ESA Lesson, which is comprised of an engage stage, then a study stage, and lastly, and activate stage. When attempting to engage students, the goal is to get them involve them in the lesson and get them thinking and speaking in English. No teaching should be done is this stage. Activities include games, music, interesting pictures, etc. During the study phase, new material is taught. Activities and exercises focus on the language and how it's constructed such as pronunciation, spelling, meaning, word order, or analysis. During the final phase, activate, the goal is to get students to use any or all of the language they know, possibly incorporating language they just learned in the study phase. Activities include role-play, surveys, debates, and story building. The Boomerang ESA lesson follows the order of engage, activate, study, activate, and the Patchwork ESA lesson utilizes the three phases however you would like. When giving corrections, you should try to focus on the positives and always let the students try to work out what is wrong before your correct them because then it will be more memorable.
