This unit discussed the 5 conditional statements or \"if/when\" statements, if this happens > that happens, and how to identify the differences. The Zero Conditional is action/facts that are irrefutable and are always stated in present tense, such as, \"When the sun shines, it warms the earth.\" The First Conditional deals with a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or certain, and is in the present simple tense followed by will, such as, \"If it snows tomorrow, it will be cold.\" The Second Conditional is a present/future hypothetical situation that isn't likely to happen. It uses the past simple tense followed by would + base form of the verb, \"If I owned a Ferrari, I would drive really fast.\" The Third Conditional is a hypothetical past action followed by the hypothetical result. If is written in the past perfect followed by would + have + past participle. \"If I had eaten the rotten tomato, I would have been sick.\" The last conditional is the Mixed Conditional, which refers to a hypothetichal past action followed by the hypothetical present consequence It uses past perfect followed by would + base form, \"If I had stolen that car, I would be in jail now.\" This unit also covered reported speech, which shows how actual (direct) speech is converted into reported (indirect) speech. This was very helpful to me, as communicating what someone said is often done incorrectly and can cause confusion as to what was said. By understanding how the different verb forms translate for reported speech, I am able to understand more clearly how to teach this, and how to use it effectively.
