This unit discusses classroom management. Specifically it discusses proper hand gestures, eye contact and voice, properly grouping students and classroom arrangement, student and teacher talking time, and maintaining discipline in the classroom. An effective teacher is animated, using plenty of hand gestures to communicate with students, but never pointing as that can make students feel uncomfortable. Eye contact can be used to make sure students are paying attention and also to communicate disapproval to misbehaving students. A teacher?s voice should be clear and loud enough for everyone to hear; there should be enough variation in the volume of voice to keep students engaged. Classroom setup is also critical and can be altered depending on class makeup and the lesson plan. Arranging the desks in rows is typical for most classes but a horseshoe-shaped setup is good for smaller classroom sizes and helps students feel more involved. Pair-work and small group work is good for increasing student talk time but it can be noisy and there is a possibility students will use their native language. Again, the ideal choice is that which keeps students motivated and engaged, and teacher talk time low. Another critical topic discussed in this unit is how to manage misbehaving students. It is important to be fair and to not seem like you are picking on one student. You must keep to school?s disciplinary code but it is possible to ?go overboard.? It?s important that students feel comfortable in the classroom so if a student needs to be reprimanded, it should be done kindly and alone after class.
