This unit focuses on the receptive skills which include reading and listening. The reasons for reading and listening are purpose and entertainment. Sometimes the reason will include both of them. Reading and listening are not simply matters for the eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to literally understand words and process them in our ?pre-existing knowledge? to gain true understanding. There are some potential problems when people teach or learn receptive skills. Such as, sentence length, word length, a number of unknown words. The ways of helping students is pre-teaching vocabulary and select texts carefully.
