This unit introduces modal auxiliary verbs and talks about their uses. I learned that these verbs do not change from the present and future tenses but do differ in the past tense. A big emphasis of this section was the influence of formality when using modal auxiliary verbs. Some of these verbs can be used to phrase your sentence in a way that is considered most polite. This unit also touched on some different ways to teach this information in the classroom, including role-play, establishing rules for something, and guessing the meaning of different traffic signs. There was also a sectioned that talked about the passive voice and the forms it can take on. From this I was reminded that only transitive verbs can be used in the passive voice. Lastly this unit touches on the three different types of clauses, independent, dependent, and relative. There are two different types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining, and the difference lies in the information given from the clause. If the information is essential to the sentence, then it is a defining clause. If the information is not essential to the sentence then it is a non-defining clause.
