This unit covers the productive skills, speaking and writing. These are the skills that are used to communicate. I learned that, as a teacher, it is imperative that I create a need and desire for the students to want to communicate. If that need or desire is not present in them, it is more likely that a lesson will be unsuccessful. I learned the difference between an accuracy lesson and a fluency lesson. Accuracy lessons or activities focus more on getting correct language out of the students. Whereas fluency lessons and activities force the students to be more creative by experimenting with the English language. Examples of different fluency and accuracy speaking activities are given in this unit. I learned some reasons that may cause students to feel shy or reluctant to speak in the classroom as well as some of ways in which I may be able to assist those students in overcoming their fears or give them encouragement. Handwriting, spelling, punctuation and creative writing all fall under our \"writing skills\". An example of a creative writing lesson is described in the unit, as well as sample games that may be played in the classroom.
