Establishing rapport with students and maintaining it is key. Effectively balancing Teacher Talk Time (TTT) and Student Talk Time will keep students engaged, help them learn, and allow for efficient communication and monitoring of the class. Seating arrangements should be flexible and allow for changing to pair work and small group work; frequent changes can help stimulate student involvement. Teacher should know each student?s name, ask for answers by name AFTER posing question, and try to assure that students know each other's names. Teacher talk is necessary and important when: - presenting, checking, modeling or clarifying - providing language input - giving instructions - establishing rapport But try to reduce TTT: use gestures, mime or pictures; avoid jargon; use simple language; don?t over-elaborate; keep instructions simple; check they are understood (ask individuals to repeat) Get students to help each other/correct each other; Don?t let individual students dominate. Be positive; show personal interest in students. Personalize activities to student?s interests & surroundings. Ask for comments & opinions from students.
