The past tense is tricky to teach because of the irregularities, but is much easier to understand when you learn the present tense completely. A lot of languages do not have all of these different variations, so it is important to speak clearly about the usages of each type of past tense (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous). I think that it is most important to go through all of the regular verbs that the students can easily remember and recognize, and then move on to the harder, irregular forms that I know will be much more difficult. There are a lot of ways to see if the students are understanding the past tense, and the ideas of activities during this unit were very helpful so that I have ideas on all of the different ways to activate the students' knowledge and to also be engaging when this lesson could turn into one that is very tedious and boring for them.
