From this unit I learnt that the past tenses follow very similar rules and similar usages to the present tenses. This is evident in that all continuous forms of the tenses feature a form of the verb 'to be' plus 'ing' verb form. All perfect forms feature a form to the verb ?to have? and the verb in past participle form. All perfect continuous forms feature a form of ?to have? + ?to be? plus ?ing? verb form. The present or past tense is determined by the tense of the auxiliary verb. While these similarities can be helpful to students they can also create confusion between the tenses so it is important to help them find ways to differentiate between the tenses. Another challenge for students with the past tenses is that many common verbs take an irregular simple past form. The students must memorise these verbs as they do not follow a rule.
