This unit covered the past tenses in English. There is the simple past, past perfect, past continuous, and past perfect continuous. When one uses the simple past, one definitely completed an action in the past, even if the time is not given (\"Last year I completed my degree\"; \"When did you finish school?\"). The past perfect indicates a completed action in the past before something else happened (\"I had been walking home when I heard a strange sound\"). The past continuous is used when something is in progress in the past at a specific time (\"I was watching TV when the telephone rang; -at nine o'clock\"). Finally, the present perfect continuous is used for an action in progress in the past which happened before another event, however one does not necessarily know whether the action was completed or continued further (\"She had been painting her nails when the doorbell rang\").
