The two receptive skills, reading and listening, come in two main forms: those that serve a purpose, and those that are for entertainment. Often, however, the two can overlap. These two skills require the learner to understand and process the language they're faced with based on their pre-existing knowledge of the world. Understanding can come in a few different forms and be done in different ways: using predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for a general idea, absorbing detailed information, and deduction of meaning from context. Problems with receptive skills fall under the areas of language, topic, or task. The keys are to keep materials motivating and interesting, build interest before reading or listening, pre-teach the difficult parts (but don't overdo it), vary material types and use them to practice different skills, use realistic comprehension tasks, and ensure that Activate phases naturally lead from the text.
