Unit 15 provides information about various types of ESL assessments/tests, including placement tests, practice tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, and external examinations. Placement tests, progress tests, and diagnostic tests are all used to measure the language ability of the student, but differ primarily in when they are taken. Placement tests are taken before the start of the course to determine what language level group the student should be placed with; diagnostic tests are taken right at the start of the course to measure the starting language level of the group to give the teacher a starting point for the course; and progress tests are taken during the course to measure how far the students have progressed at that point in the syllabus. Practice tests are used to help students prepare for external examinations, which are administered by a third party and can provide the student with official English qualifications at a certain level.
