This unit explains in some detail about modals, phrasal verbs and the difference between passive and active voices. A modal is used in front of a verb give further meaning of the verb being used. A few examples of modals are, can, could, would and must. A phrasal verb is a verb consisting of both a verb and a preposition or adverb or both. An example sentence would be, 'how often does he put up with you?' put up with you being the phrasal verb. The difference between using passive and active voice is who/what is emphasized within the sentence. When using an active voice the agent/does is the main subject of the sentence. Where as in a passive sentence the object is the focus within the sentence. These are three more complex areas in the English language and might be a little more difficult to teach. Might be easiest to explain what they all are and the basic rules to the students and then use them within the classroom to help the students to further understand.
