The future tense offers its own set of challenges with its variety of grammatical forms. Whereas present and past tense have four types, the future tense has three additional types: be going, present simple, and present continuous. These additional forms have the potential to confuse English learners with their unique usages that are similar in form to their present tense counterparts but are interpreted quite differently depending on the context. Teaching these forms requires some creativity in different activities, especially for the activate stage, which is when students can really see their understanding take off, whether through role plays, paired interactions, or otherwise. Based on my own understanding of this lesson, distinguishing between the future perfect and future perfect continuous comes naturally in my head, but thinking about how to teach the nuances between the two provided a tougher challenge entirely. In the future, I know that I will have to revisit the exact grammatical underpinnings underlying the distinction.
