Unit 19 deals with the teaching of Special ESL Groups and discusses such topics as Teaching Individual Students vs. Teaching a Class; Teaching a Multilingual Class vs a Monolingual Class; Teaching Beginners or Young Learners vs Teaching Adult Learners, and teaching to \"specialized\" groups, such as Business groups. A large portion of the unit deals with Teaching Business English and the Unit had many excellent pointers in this regard. I learned, for example, the importance of (1) determining the language level of participants, (2) conducting a needs analysis, and (3) Negotiating Group Priorities. The tips under \"Things to Consider\" were also useful. I think there was one weakness in this chapter -- the sample Needs Analysis that was provided. While the information being solicited is spot on, the survey itself is poorly laid out and and confusing. Knowing that your ESL teachers are going to copy it and use this exact format for their Needs Analysis, I think that more care should be spent on its design. It looks very unprofessional.
