For me the hardest challenges in learning English were spelling and grammar in the written language. Ability to speak and understand spoken language came easily after the written language, after I had developed fast reading and started to think in English language as pronounced correctly, not as the written text would be pronounced in my first language. TEFL way of teaching is far more efficient for students who need to learn the language fast, and can achieve some fluency between 6 and 12 months, whereas the traditional lessons in the primary and secondary school by non-native teacher could take much longer, depending a lot on student's individual effort. It took me 7 years to be able to efficiently understand and communicate in English, and the personal motivation had big effect on the learning pace. Most importantly TEFL way of teaching helps to reduce the feel of stress and insecurity, avoiding negative feedback, encouraging active use of the language, making the lessons fun by games and making the lesson plan to meet the student requirements, instead of following study book and focusing on the grammar as it was the way of learning foreign language in the past.
