This unit explores two separate concepts: conditionals and reported speech. The five conditionals are examined in form and usage and typical mistakes/errors are brought to the teacher's attention to prepare for all possibilities using a variety of teaching ideas, ranging from matching split sentences to \"mixed drill excuses bingo\" where students practise completing excuses e.g If......, I wouldn't be bald now. (If I hadn't shaved my head, ...) The transition from Direct Speech to Reported Speech is examined carefully, focusing on verb tenses and how they \"backshift\" e.g. Jack announced,\"I intend to walk on the beach tomorrow.\" Changes to ... Jack announced that he intended to walk on the beach the next day. Because the potential for mistakes/errors is enormous due to the number of changes made with verb tenses, patterns, pronouns, questions, time expressions, etc, teachers are cautioned to proceed slowly and incorporate a variety of role-playing activities that encourage students to report that which has been said or done by third parties. Teachers are encouraged to think of original and inspiring teaching ideas for the purposes of engaging, study and activating.
