This unit addresses fundamental questions on how students acquire new language skills. It starts with an explanation of the four basic skills all languages require and breaks them down into receptive skills: reading and listening, and productive skills: speaking and writing. The unit then focuses on the receptive skills. It details the reasons people read: for pleasure and for a purpose, and how people read and listen. It then further categorizes skills needed to gain expertise in reading and listening, such as scanning, skimming, and predicting, and discusses potential problems that may occur while teaching reading and listening skills. The next section of the unit details what teachers should consider when selecting text for students to read, the need to choose appropriate and interesting text, and the importance of pre-teaching vocabulary that may cause confusion. The remainder of the unit details a patchwork lesson plan that includes all aspects needed to review and reinforce reading and listening skills. Although this unit is short, it is significant because it focuses on the skills new learners need to acquire so they can increase their listening and reading skills.
