Unit 15 deals with evaluation and testing. It covers four main types of tests: placement, diagnostic, progress and practice tests. External tests are also discussed, including the TOEFL, which most ESL teachers need to be familiar with, as well as the Cambridge Assessment and others. I found, in doing the tasks at the end of the unit, that I had trouble identifying the strengths and weaknesses in the Language Skills Placement Test. At first I thought Section 2 questions were poorly designed/worded, but then I thought that perhaps this is what a \"Gap-fill\" exercise looks like. Similarly, I found that there were several questions in both section 1 and 2 that could have had more than one correct answer. When I began Task 5 - writing a 30 minute progress test for beginners testing all four skills -- I was initially lost, until I looked online for \"esl beginner ........... test.\" From this information I was able to design a beginner progress test. My test, however, lacks cohesion because I didn't know what to focus on: my Grammar Section focused on Present Simple and Past Simple; my Vocab test focused on clothes; My Reading test was about a typical day, etc.
