To say that one needs to treat verb tenses with the utmost cautious would be an understatement. I cannot name a single person in my travels who had perfect mastery of verb tenses, much less conditionals. As I mentioned in my comments in a previous unit, even in the (American) corporate world, there is not a single person who actually utilizes all 12 verb tenses even in the course of a year. On top of that, Americans (myself included) are notoriously sloppy about properly wording conditionals and reported speech. The actual norm is for people to use maybe 3 or 4 verb tenses (of out 12), and incorrectly, to boot. They would invariably follow up their first sentence with another sentence to clarify exactly what they meant by their first sentence. This is the order of the day. I have seen a gradual degradation in people's English language ability even amongst native speakers over the past few decades. Furthermore, public schools in the US crank out masses of youth who basically don't even have the basic foundations of English grammar, spelling, etc that my generation grew up with. I'll wrap up my remarks at this point before this turns into a full editorial or rant. :)
