This unit had a lot of useful information about teaching grammar, vocabulary, and language functions to English learners. The main portion of the chapter was how to incorporate the ESA structure into a lesson about these topics. For me, this unit was a good reminder of how to appropriately use the ESA structure in teaching, and also I learned a little bit about the importance of teaching language functions, which I did not know before reading this chapter. Language functions include things like inviting, commanding, suggesting, agreeing, and indicating a hope or wish. As I think about it, many of these areas need to be expressed very carefully in order to maintain the proper polite, intimate, relaxed, or firm tone. This unit suggests using the \"boomerang\" or \"patchwork\" ESA type of lesson and the need for activation of language, and perhaps this is because many of these tone-related questions associated with language functions have a variety of different expressions in English. The easiest way to learn these different expressions is by repeating them and using them in appropriate settings, so the brain will learn to associate these expressions with that particular need.
