In this unit I learned what to consider when teaching vocabulary, grammar, and functions to students, from selecting vocabulary and presenting key ideas. Criteria for selecting vocabulary include the appropriacy to the students and to a given task, how likely students are to use or come across it, and how teachable it is to the level of students in the classroom. Key ideas students need to know about vocabulary include its meaning, how it is used appropriately, where it belongs (word grammar), how it interacts with other words, spelling, and pronunciation. Key ideas students need to know about grammatical structures include what the language means, how it is used, what the form and patterns of the language are, and how it is said and written. Key ideas students need to know about language functions are areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing and suggesting. An additional key idea for students to know about language function is the appropriateness of the language, such as formal, informal, tentative, and technical use. All of these key ideas can be taught using the straight ESA, boomerang ESA, and patchwork ESA structures and activities learned in past units.
