This unit discussed testing as a way to gauge a student's level of English or progress with the English language. Personally, I don't know that I would be in favor of using multiple choice tests or even fill-in-the-blank type tests to gauge an individual's level of proficiency. As was mentioned in the lesson, these tests can in effect become tests of memory more so than tests of an individual's skill with the language. Short answer (requiring complete sentences), short essay, essay or oral exams to me would be a better way for students to demonstrate what they have learned. These type of tests would require more critical thinking skills on the students part and require that they demonstrate that they can not only understand the written and spoken English language, but that they can give appropriate responses to questions. I also happen to think that this is true for any subject, not just English. Sadly, since the advent of machines that can automatically grade a multiple choice test, it's often easier for teachers to give students a choice of a, b, c or d, and have them regurgitate memorized factoids as opposed to really testing to see if they've learned the concepts.
