Teaching methodology is the vital force that holds a lesson. It encompasses everything that needs to be done in the class: planning, activities and evaluation. Traditional methodology often restricts the natural flow of language learning and subscribes to drills and more repetitive types of activities. Up-to-date approaches promotes more organic ways of communicating and interacting. There are a variety of methods and an English teacher must be equipped with a handful in order to match what method is suitable for a certain type of lesson, group and learning goal. Choosing a method corresponds to a balance of three things: the lesson, the teacher's knowledge and style and the learning styles and needs of the students, with the later, being more emphasized. A teacher has to be flexible in administering her methods because learning styles and needs are different. This does not mean that the teacher must be discouraged with sticking to one. She just has to make sure that the methods are suitable for the lesson and the student. I have always ascribed to more interactive and discovery types of methods but know that certain methods like audio- lingualism are still effective especially when learning phonemic awareness. I like administering task- based and community language learning because these are more of modeling to real life situations. When I present a task-based approach, I always make it a point to have a comprehensive study part before-hand, so as not to sacrifice grammar and language structure knowledge. I am a fan of community learning, but sometimes, I choose topics before-hand so we can culminate responses as a class. I make it a point that students really practice what they learn and as a teacher, my activate stage is always practical.
