This unit was quite brief but it talks about three important subjects and how they can be taught. Vocabulary, Grammatical Structures, and Functions represent the bulk of english teaching, actually, anything language teaching. A learner needs to learn many different vocab words, the structures they are used in, and using them in various ways such as inviting much like a Language Function. As the unit puts it, Grammar is the tree trunk and branches, providing the basis for the tree, and the vocabulary and functions we use provide the color and depth to the tree, in the form of it's leaves. With Teaching Vocabulary, I see the problem that a teacher can run into. Fighting the urge to make long repetitive drills that are bland and featureless is the goal of a good teacher. Therefore, each vocabulary introduction should follow a theme and we should follow the Engage Study Activate structures we learned about in prior units to give the vocabulary life and color. Say I teach Department Store english, Engage the students in the topic would be showing the an American Mall and talking about various brands. Study could be showcasing exercises where various vocab we just learned will be used in Gap Fill Exercises. And for the Activate, maybe a map making exercise that is mixed with a story telling element to showcase a Present Tense Vocab enforced lesson. The Unit continues on to Grammatical Structures. Much like Vocab, we need to teach the meaning, uses, forms and differences between spoken and written forms to teach the whole scope. Lastly, the chapter finishes off with teaching about Language Functions in a similar fashion to the previous counterparts. Each section features examples on how to teach the ESA functions of each and gives ideas on how to engage the students.
