The ?modals? are: can, could may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn?t, and ought to. They are used with other verbs to express request, ability, obligation, possibility, and so on. Modal auxiliary verbs, when used in a sentence, can control not only the meaning of a sentence but also express differing degrees of formality. ?Must? is usually the strongest modal auxiliary verb for an obligation, and ?May? is normally the most formal modal auxiliary verb. Active voice describes a sentence where the subject performs the action stated by the verb, the focus is on the agent. In passive voice sentences, the subject is acted upon by the verb. Passive voices are used when the agent or ?doer? of the action is unknown or unimportant. It is also used to change focus and to conceal the agent of the action. Both sentences have the same meaning basically. When switching sentences into passive voice, the modal auxiliary verb is conjugated into the same exact tense as the active voice sentence. Only transitive verbs are used in the passive. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles. There are three types of phrasal verbs namely intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. Phrasal verbs differ in their transitivity or intransitivity in the same way as normal verbs do. A transitive verb always has an object while intransitive verb doesn?t. A phrasal verb has a meaning that is different from the original verb, that's what makes them fun, but confusing too. When introducing them to the students, it is best taught as vocabulary items. They should be introduced gradually and dropped in naturally every now and then to assist familiarization among students.
