Students can be categorized into different skill levels, and some can be placed into multiple groups. It is important for the teacher to tailor their teaching style to see what fits best in the classroom. Teachers have differing opinions teaching beginning students. However, it can be extremely rewarding. There tends to be 5 types of students at the beginning level. Absolute beginners, who know no English, false beginners, little exposure to English, Adult and young beginner, and beginners without the roman alphabet. Some important tips to keep in mind are: Be as visual as possible, keep things simple and realistic, pace your lesson slowly, use homework and revise frequently, and use pair and group work. It is important to not over-correct, praise and encourage, and ultimately be sensitive and aware on how your students are feeling about the class. Teaching individual students is a bit different since group activities are of no use. Here you can use conversation for most the time and focus on vocabulary and homework. These lessons are tailored more towards the individual need. Be sure to provide students with the correct vocabulary if assigning any homework such as reading articles or passages. With children, praise and encouragement must be emphasized. A lot of the principles from teaching beginners can apply here as well. The main thing is to keep lessons fun and fresh. As for discipline, it is much easier to start off more strict and then to relax as time goes on. Business students tend to be older ranging from early 20s to mid 50s. For teaching business specific English, it helps to know what your student?s company does. This can be done through a student-filled questionnaire called a ?needs analysis.? Plan the lesson accordingly and be sure to monitor progress.
