This unit lists and explains different methods, theories and techniques teachers can use while teaching English as a second language. There are many different methods, some are more effective than others. The classical methods would be Grammar- translation. This method is the most popular among teachers but it is not always useful because it focuses on translation of the native language to English, which can only work if the two languages have the similar grammar. Another method would be Audio- lingualism. Whit this method the teacher focuses on vocabulary and pronunciation and students learn by repeating words or sentences after the teacher. It depends on the teacher what method he or she uses but for ESL teachers ESA method would be the most relevant. ESA is especially useful for new teachers and it is good for motivating students and gives the teacher more flexibility. The components of ESA are engage, study, and activate. In first ?phase? a teacher is trying to involve students with different games and activities. Study is about boardwork and construction. In the activate ?phase? fluency is more important than accuracy. It is about using the new language in a realistic context. In this unit I learned about different types of ESA lessons and actual examples. It depends on the student's level of English which type the teacher uses. The straight arrow ESA lesson can be used for lower levels, because it can became predictable, Boomerang and Patchwork would be more suitable for students with higher level. In this lesson I also learned the importance of giving proper feedback and correction to the students. A good teacher should try to avoid pointing out the mistakes and try to give them room for self correction, which gives them time to reflect and try again.
