This unit helped me to reflect on what the learners will need to know and the underpinning factors to consider in teaching English. The key points I learned are: To learn a new language, students need to be able to: 1. be exposed to it, 2. understand its meaning, 3. how it is constructed, and 4. be able to practice and produce it. Points 1 through 4 would also have to take usefulness of the language to the students and the task at hand, how the students will use the language and its context, and the learning ability of the student. Point 4 above would help me to formulate the overall lesson objective, e.g. ?to understand and use the past simple and past continuous tenses.? Point 1 would help me think about function for the objective, e.g., to describe an accident they witnessed while travelling in the U.K. to a police constable. Point 2 would help me think about what vocabulary is required to carry out the above function and the meanings, e.g., action verbs of the scene, nouns, adjectives ? run, hit, fell, dark, time, date, height, sex, colours, etc. Point 3 would help me think about what language structure (grammar) is needed. Grammatical structures will enable the students to use the vocabulary correctly, e.g., the study of past simple and past continuous tense, correct sentence structure. Then I could think about the best structure to use for the class and language being introduced, e.g., straight line, boomerang or patchwork. Other than point 4, I think point 1 is crucial, particularly in older children and adults because building lessons around a useful function will help the students to learn about what they will need and use in their everyday life. This increases learning receptivity, and the language is more likely to be practiced and produced.
