Unit 16 takes a look at the five different forms of conditional sentences and shows ideas how to teach them. The next section defines reported and direct speech. Different changes have to be considered when 'backshifting' from direct speech to reported speech like verb changes, patterns, pronouns, time expressions, etc.. Detailed explanations are given on these changes because they often present enormous difficulties for the students. Consequently, the teacher has to possess a thorough understanding of the subject. Teaching ideas are suggested at the end of the unit which further facilitate the task of teaching this aspect of English grammar. Unit 16 has helped me to obtain a more structured understanding of the different conditionals. Being more conscious now of the different changes that have to be made when 'backshifting' from direct speech to reported speech, will make it easier for me to explain these to students. But I realize that these changes have to be taught slowly and progressively because the potential for mistakes and errors is enormous.
