The two videos used in this unit show the stark differences between an ineffective and effective English class. The first video is rather difficult to watch as the teacher?s approach, lesson, and methods are completely ineffective. The teacher maintains a dour attitude throughout, he asks students to provide answers to information they do not understand. Rather than provide further detail he emphasizes points that are unclear to students, his transitions are weak, he does not know the student?s names, he has little interaction with them other than to call on them for answers and then reply that they are correct or incorrect. He ignores them during their study and activity phases, he repeatedly stares at his lesson notes and does not monitor their progress during the study phase, there is no real activity phase at the end because there is no interaction between the students and the teacher, nor any creative engagement between students. In the second video, the teacher displays a highly effective lesson that addresses the problems with the first lesson. His mood is positive, he smiles a lot, engages the students throughout the lesson, has a clear engagement stage where he allows the students to generate a list rather than show them a premade list, knows the student?s names and repeats them as he calls on them. The teacher uses mime, gestures, and realia to add clarification. He also includes a verbal dictation drill that allows every student to practice speaking. Before they start the final activity, he provides a clear example of how to complete the first step of the assignment. He again monitors their progress and allows them to provide examples of their work. There is a clear delineation between the engage, study, and activate phases in this lesson. These two lessons highlight the necessity of not only providing well-planned and stimulating lessons but also the importance of maintaining a positive and engaging atmosphere that allows the focus of the class to shift between student-centered and teacher-centered.
