Three ways to assess a student?s language level are via tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials can be done individually with students or as a whole. During this time, teachers can review the work done, discuss the aims of the lesson, any problems, and how well the students performed. Evaluation by the students are done through questionnaire or guided discussion. This promotes genuine interaction as well as a greater awareness of what?s happening in the classroom. Tests can be done at different stages of the course and include a variety of kinds, such as placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, and achievement tests. Placement tests are made to enable teachers to place students into the correct class according to their language ability. This is usually done via multiple choice questions in addition to a short interview with increasingly complex questions. Progress tests are used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten. These are a balance of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in addition to grammar and vocabulary. Diagnostic tests are more extensive placement tests, given at the start of the course to see what the students already know. This helps the teacher prepare the appropriate lessons and materials tailored to the class. Practice tests follow the format and structure of an external examination the students are preparing for. General external examinations include TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), and TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication). Cambridge Assessment is responsible for a broad range of assessments and include a number of different categories of exams including general English, Skills for Life, and Business English. I learned that different assessments can be made throughout a course to see what student know and what else needs to be taught. When used appropriately it is helpful for both the students and teachers.
