This unit called \"Troubleshooting\" discussed common problem situations a TESOL/TEFL teacher might encounter. The first issue discussed was the appropriate way to conduct a first lesson. The primary focus of a first lesson would NOT be to cover anything in the textbook, but rather would be for the teacher to establish rapport between and with the students. Additionally the teacher should find out more about the students, i.e., their needs, aspirations, and levels. Different ways of accomplishing this were given as well as ideas for warmers for all classes. A second issue discussed was teachers having a class of students at various levels. Some ideas for handling this type of situation were splitting the class and using different materials, using the same materials but giving different tasks, pairing stronger students with weaker ones, and just not doing anything, allowing the students to find their own level in the class. Another problem that was addressed was a teacher being assigned a large class. In such a situation, the teacher would need to adjust their way of working with the students. They could use worksheets, pairing and group work, and choral repetition. Having group leaders would also be helpful. Students using their native language within a mono-lingual class could also present a problem for the TEFL teacher. Suggestions were given on how to avoid this. For example, it was suggested that the teacher only speak in English and not respond to the native language. Other suggestions were making sure to have activities appropriate to student language levels and giving clear instructions. Another issue that could be faced by a TEFL/TESOL teacher is that of reluctant students. Use of plenty of pair work and role- play could help alleviate that problem. Last of all, the problem of listening to recorded texts was addressed. Checking on the quality of the recording and pre-teaching difficult vocabulary were two suggestions for helping with listening issues. Once again this unit was good and helpful. I have thoroughly enjoyed this course.
