A good teacher is capable of assessing the language levels of their students and providing appropriate materials and activities that will engage and motivate their students. This person should also be able to identify the areas in which individual students are experiencing difficulty and offer personalized assistance that can help the student remain on track with the rest of the class. Despite this teachers should try to engage with each student in the class equally so as not to create an appearance of favoritism or draw attention to specific students which may lead to that student's embarrassment. Teachers may encounter a variety of students agewise and these students all present with a variety of associated psychological traits, needs and expectations and may require completely different instructional methods in terms of the types of activities and topics they will find engaging and how information can be presented to them. Teachers are also required to be aware of their student's cultural backgrounds as this directly affects the students behavior in social situations as well as their expectations for their learning experience. Teachers are required to adopt a variety of roles within the classroom setting that may be relevant to the activities that are ongoing. This includes directly leading and controlling classroom activities, organizing self directed or group learning tasks for students, assessing student performance, providing an example of language proficiency, providing subtle prompts to guide students and participating in or monitoring ongoing student activities. However, regardless of how good they are teachers can hardly be successful without motivated students who are willing to participate in class activities and engage with the language they are learning. Students must be willing to practice the language and discuss any learning problems they experience with the teach so that they can receive the necessary assistance. Students must take a certain amount of responsibility for their learning experience if they wish to see continued progress.
