Unit 9 discusses lesson planning. First, the unit tells us why we need to plan our lessons, that is, the reasons for us to do this. Then the particulars of lesson planning are discussed. We are then given an example of a written lesson plan. Next, we are given materials that will be used in planning two lessons and we are told to write two lesson plans. A guide to evaluating how our lesson went is also included. The reasons we write out our lesson plans are that (1) they are an excellent way to help us be more clear about what we want to achieve with our lesson, like making a goal first, and then (2) it helps us keep on course with how we intend to accomplish that goal. Next, the written lesson plan becomes a record of what has been done so that we can know what we have already accomplished. It also helps if we have to use a substitute teacher, so he/she will know the planned objective, goals and procedure. Guidelines are then given as to what is important to write down in lesson planning. For instance, we need to keep it simple as well as flexible. A balance of skills should be used in the activities, and time restraints should be planned for. Other guidelines include suggestions for being organized in presenting our lessons, such as making sure we have all our materials and our written plan, making sure the seating is most optimal for the situation, and making sure any equipment is working. Things that need to be included in the lesson planning are the objectives or goals for the student that are to be accomplished, any personal aims the teacher might have, grammar, vocabulary, etc. language points that we would like to present, a list of materials that we need to bring to enhance and facilitate the lesson, a written procedure of the steps the lesson will follow, including the phase of the step, the timing of the step, and who will be involved, ie, teacher-student, or student-student, for example. These are some of the important things that are needed in the lesson plan. A guide is included with blank areas to fill in all the aspects of planning.
