The unit helps as it explains the different roles that an English teacher can take, something which I have taken on board, I feel that I have learnt different approaches to the methods of teaching which can affect how a student may learn the language. The overview of the different roles helped me in determining this. As a certain approach might help a student learn more, whereas the same approach to another student may prohibit learning. The unit stresses that each role should be defined by the activity that the teacher carries out, and what the teacher wishes to achieve by the activity. It also stresses the importance of being able to understand when and which role should be used, and thus being able to carry out each role effectively to engage the students and help enhance learning. The unit also provides knowledge on the many different factors that a learner of the English language may have, it looks in many different aspects of the student. The unit goes in detail regarding of age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behaviour problems, life experience and culture and first language. This part of the course will help as it will give a much wider perspective of people teaching the English language that there are many varying factors and levels of the students and that each different student may require different approaches depending on the different aspects of the students. In conclusion, this unit gives a very brief but important overview of the different approaches required depending on the situation, and that there are many different types of students that teachers may have to deal with, and it is up to the teacher to determine which role they should assume depending on the aforementioned factors.
