This unit taught me about problems that could arise when fostering receptive skills. Students may attempt to read every single word in a passage when really we want to encourage them to seek out the general idea. The length of a passage is also something to keep in mind. Students have a tendency to have difficulty reading longer passages so we need to make sure passages are an appropriate length. When students listen what they hear may flow continuously. Additionally, the material they listen to may be too quick, and they may not have time to process and understand what they just heard. A teacher's accent may also affect a student's listening.
