This unit talks about course materials and everything teachers should consider when choosing content for their lessons. There are two types of materials: authentic and created. Authentic materials are anything a native speaker hears or reads, such as a pamphlet, a letter, a song, a movie, or a menu, while created materials are made by the teacher and include activities such as crosswords, flash cards, and word search puzzles. Each type of material has its own benefits and can be made to cater to the level of students depending on their usage. Authentic materials should be selected carefully in this regard and teachers should make sure to pick materials that cater to their students' interests. When it comes to course books, there are many advantages and disadvantages to using them along with different methods of incorporating the course book into lessons. One of the most important aspects of lesson planning to remember is to not rely too heavily on the course book by itself. Course books provide a great guideline for teachers with a balance of skill activities but teachers must also provide their own supplementary materials in order to ascertain that their students' individual needs and interests are being met.
