This unit, 'Teaching receptive skills', focuses on the importance of teaching 'reading and listening' to students. Both receptive skills are equally important and, thus, a balanced approach in teaching both skills is encouraged. Reasons and motives for applying receptive skills can be divided into two general categories: 1) for a purpose (reading instructions on a new video recorder); and 2) for entertainment (reading a novel). After proving that reading and listening are not simply matters for the eyes and ears but also require the use of our mind to literally understand as well as process words in our pre-existent knowledge to come to a correct understanding ('Bears destroyed by cowboys'), the unit provides valuable information on how to help students overcome obstacles to reading and listening. An outline of a receptive skills lesson is also provided. I especially appreciated all the helpful suggestions on how to overcome language difficulties such as pre-teaching vocabulary (teaching of difficult/unknown language and structures) and careful selection of texts, especially authentic materials. The basic seven keys to successful receptive skills lessons (bottom of page five) are a very useful teaching aid as well.
