I've often wondered about the phonemic alphabet (and I keep wanting to say \"phonetic alphabet\"). I've spent a lifetime ignoring the phonemic spelling of every word I find in the dictionary. Truth be told, I never thought using the phonemic alphabet was very practical, because a person (both teacher and student) would need to learn the phonemic alphabet first before it has any value in teaching and learning. I understand its value in terms of standardizing pronunciation and phonology, because (as the author stated in this unit, English is not a phonetic language). However, what's the point of learning essentially two alphabets? I obviously have some reservations about that considering the fact that none of us (native English speakers, nor natives speakers of any other language) learned correct pronunciation and phonology using such aids. We just practiced and learned the correct pronunciation, phonology, intonation, etc of words and sentences by pure repetition and practice. That being said, I've decided for my own sake as a teacher that it is in my best interest to become familiar with the phonemic chart for my own edification. It's good to know and finally understand things that you've always wondered about.
