Unit 5 focused on the various tools a teacher could use to manage a class effectively and successfully without sacrificing rapport with the students. Over all it is important to make sure that the students are not only comfortable with the teacher, but with each other as well. In order to create a comfortable environment it is encouraged that students talk to one another openly. It is not recommended that a teacher assumes a dominant position at the front of the room at all times (though it also depends on the status quo of the culture). A teacher can manage the class through various activities ranging from classwork to individual work, the physical arrangement of the class and effective disciplinary tactics if a student gets unruly. She can check herself by using various gestures and body language to assume different roles as a teacher in the classroom at various times. This includes when and how to use her voice, eye contact or kinds of gestures as well as how she writes on the board or gives instructions. The overall atmosphere and success of the class is dependent on rapport between the students and the teacher as well as the students themselves. How the teacher builds such rapport is dependent on all of the above.
